Professor Ruben was excellent and all the students --from experienced professionals to newcomers-- showed high engagement. Definitely recommended for everyone looking for enrichment in a fun, non-intimidating setting!"

Italian Renaissance Art – Short Series

Italian Renaissance The Renaissance was a cultural movement that profoundly affected European intellectual life in the early modern period. Beginning in Italy, and spreading to the rest of Europe by the 16th Century, its influence was felt in literature, philosophy, art, music, politics, science, religion, and other aspects of intellectual inquiry.

This course will explain and outline the ideas and artists who made the Italian Renaissance one of the high points in Western Art History. Beginning in the 14th Century and working through to the 16th Century, the sessions will explain how new ideas re-shaped the way people thought and how they made art.

…I really enjoyed Ruben’s talk. He so cleverly wove the content of Noriko Ambe’s work with a fascinating history of books.
I was also intrigued to hear about his wife Danne Ojeda’s own 660 page book on such a thought provoking topic. …

Corcovado Arts not only teaches you about the Arts, it also ingrains your passion for Art

In this course on Modernism- from Manet to Picasso , one understands with great clarity how the pioneers of each new era were driven by the need to create a different and more authentic idiom that reflected their changing ideals and their perceptions of reality.
I look forward to seeing you again soon at another brilliant Corcovado series of lectures.

Nov'15 - Vathani Rajah - Lawyer & Art Enthusiast

The two courses that I have attended by Corcovado Arts were well organized and informative. Not only have I broadened my knowledge on modern art, I have also gained a deeper appreciation for it. A work by Cézanne or Matisse will never look the same again. Thank you CorcovadoArts!

Jan'14 - Avril Ung, Business Owner – i.AM.Jeweller

WOW – hard for me to believe that I found such a class in Singapore.
There is so much to learn! And next time I see all of this stuff (such as in the Hermitage) I will see SO much more than I normally see.

Sep'14 - Dr. Margaret Gremli

Thank you so much for... the thought provoking and engaging way you teach your class. I'm sad it's almost ending...

Apr'15 - Contemporary Art Course participant

I was thinking for Contemporary Art, I think I might register for the entire course again. It is so mind-boggling but in a good way!

May'15 - Jaime Tay

I want to thank you for the organization and the professionalism of the course, I loved it! I enjoyed and learned a lot! I would recommend it, it was awesome.

Jan'14 - Modern Art Course participant

I really enjoyed the lecture on the "pioneer" artists of Singapore. Sian was very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, which made the whole event a delightful experience! I didn't know much about Singapore modernism, but now I have the feeling I have a good background to dig further into the subject

Feb'14 - Spore Modernism Talk & Walk participant

Many thanks again, as I've had a very enjoyable and fruitful short art course with you. A big thank you to Dr Jay Sian, for her very well researched and insightful knowledge of old masters to modern artworks. Dr Sian's movingly expressive lectures and in-depth knowledge in articulating various artists and their messages they conveyed in their artworks is highly commendable. I salute you Dr Sian!

Jun'16 - Benjamin Chia - Modern Art History participant

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for the outstanding lecture Dr. Jay gave to our Docent trainees!
Her extensive experience, depth of understanding of Art in Singapore combined with the wonderful presentation made this lecture truly informative and engaging. We now have a deeper knowledge of all the sculptures that surround us in this beautiful city! We are all keen on exploring!

Nov’16 - Friends of the Museum (FOM) - SAM Docent Training Program

… Professor Ruben has an uncanny ability to map out the context of contemporary, and in this case, conceptual art, in its history - both ancient and modern, as well as across cultures.

In this particular one, “Book as Art” was a beautifully precise look into the context surrounding Noriko Ambe’s (Un)filtered Reflections, where the artist used school textbooks and deconstructed them with students. Referencing, and introducing to us the parallels in the modern history of contemporary art - including the performative translation of On Kawara’s work, where individuals read out the chronological years in public spaces, resulting in an almost trance-like state. One gets a sense of the history of art in an era that is almost defined by its negative public perception of being inexplicable, and the talk being situated in the gallery space, right next to the art itself, lends it a performative, and almost theatrical air….

An Lin Loh - Book as an artistic Object Talk, Feb 2018

Professor Ruben's in-depth talk on the nature and history of art biennials allows a contextualisation of this momentous art event in the art world. In a refreshingly clear mode of delivery, he guides us through the reasons for its existence and explains the major shifts in thought within the larger art community - mainly the embrace of the art world beyond the Western canon in contemporary times. A look into Singapore's own art journey allows one too to reflect on the difference between the realities of the state of art, and what the state wishes for it to be - all cleverly facilitated by Professor Ruben himself.

Nov’16 – An Lin Loh, Bienale’s Talk participant

I knew next to nothing about Chinese Ink painting even though I long admired the genre. After hearing Gertrude explaining its history and development I have become hooked and look forward to more talks on the subject from this highly informative speaker.

May'17 - Dr. Sian Jay

I love Corcovado Arts courses, they really go beyond Art History, they also impart art appreciation skills

Apr'14 - Angela Torres, Art Promoter – Art180 degrees

Oct'16 - Florence Martellini - Biennale's Talk Participant

Dr Sian Jay is an excellent speaker! She is an Oxford trained professor of art history, architecture, and anthropology, and very well versed in many cultural subjects. I love listening to her speak, she is often very humorous too!

Thank you for organizing such interesting and insightful events...

I received additional feedback last night from attendees that they looked at the city differently now that they could recognise a couple more landmarks.

May'16 - Singapore's Sculptures Trail - PrimeTime SG Org

The talks are worth paying for because the sessions are easy to understand. The speakers are close to their students and I get to share my ideas and perspectives with people who love art in an open-minded atmosphere. - Statement on Stratis Times Aug 25th, 2015

Aug'15 - Sandra Turysk - Art Enthusiast

I really enjoyed the talk last moth…as I am so grateful you organize such events.
I wish there will be more people to attend such events to be aware of the true fine art

May’18 – Modern Art Series – Michelle Ma, artist

I really liked the Singapore Visual Arts Eco-System talk - an underpinning of the macro policies that shape the contemporary art world, especially in Singapore... To be able to see the mistakes (?) in policy and how it's impacting the ecosystem and comparing it with the NY one... Learnt a lot from Paul (:
